Blue13 Background
Blue13 Dance Company is an American dance theatre ensemble based in Los Angeles. Founded by Artistic Director Achinta S. McDaniel, Blue13 has connected audiences through the power of live aesthetically and culturally daring dance, performing in the U.S. and abroad in its highly energetic and theatrical modern dance style that is inspired in part by the classical and cultural art forms of the Indian subcontinent.
Position Description
The Communications and Production Intern will receive hands-on experience developing and implementing marketing strategies, and producing and presenting live performances of dance. The intern will help Blue13 expand American dance to include both contemporary and classical forms of dance from the cultures of the Global Majority. The intern will identify areas of production, marketing, and other administrative aspects of the nonprofit arts world to explore, and will build a personal passion project that will be supported by Blue13’s administrative and creative staff, working 15-20 hours per week, from late summer through the winter.
The Communications and Production Intern will play a significant role in the planning and creation of promotional collateral and marketing campaigns to generate more attention to Blue13’s community engagement and artistic programming including website, press, and print. They will also play a key role in executing social media campaigns including creating content and generating a social media strategy campaign with metrics in order to gain an understanding of Blue13’s audience and enhance the company’s reach. Not only will the intern have an opportunity to build the marketing of Blue13, but they will also be an integral part of creating a safe and efficient space during production season for Blue13 shows.
Responsibilities
The Communications and Production Intern will be responsible for creating and updating website updates weekly, sending regular email blasts and maintaining email lists on Blue13’s CRM, and assisting with Blue13’s press kit and press relations. The goals of the intern should be to:
Increase followers and engagement on all social media platforms as detailed below
Sustain and increase Blue13’s marketing presence through social media, press, live marketing, advertising, public relations, and website
Directly create and disseminate communications to the public and to relevant stakeholders for Blue13’s artistic programming activities
Increase attendance at engagements through social media, marketing and press
The intern will maintain and post regularly on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok. The Intern will have the opportunity to test strategies to increase followers and engagement in all social media networks, leaving a legacy at Blue13 by having drafted a plan that remains in place after their departure. Other duties include gathering metrics and planning social media posts and stories appropriately with short and long-term goals, and delivering reports to their supervisor regularly.
The intern will also be responsible for assisting with various production aspects of Blue13’s shows throughout the season. When the company is performing, the intern’s duties may include backstage responsibilities such as costumes, props, assistant stage management (ASM), and more. Front-of-house duties may include welcoming guests, and selling tickets. The intern may also take on ASM roles during rehearsals.
Additional Duties
The intern will also perform related tasks including tracking marketing analytics, responses to campaigns, filing, and correspondence. Part of their filing responsibilities will include organizing marketing materials, photos, press, archival materials, and videos digitally on Blue13’s Google Drive. The intern may also participate in light graphic design work, and photo/video capture and editing. The intern may be a part of development communications to funders and individual donors, and help to create fundraising campaigns and to track their effectiveness.
qualifications
Blue13 welcomes and encourages applicants from all academic backgrounds. The ideal applicant will have an appreciation for dance with an interest in marketing, social media content creation/management, and production on a professional level. They should be strong writers, proactive, organized, resourceful, and feel comfortable generating and sharing ideas for continual improvement. Knowledge of Google Suite and MS Office are desired, and proficiency using Adobe Creative Cloud software including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator are helpful. Familiarity with current social media platforms including TikTok, Youtube, Instagram, and Facebook is required.
