Los Angeles-based Blue13 Dance Company has been performing theatrical modern dance for over 20 years. Their style is inspired by classical and cultural art forms of the Indian subcontinent. The company’s mission is to create a shift in the perception and practice of American dance through performance, community, and education. Role and Responsibilities:
Blue13 seeks to hire a Communications Intern who will receive hands-on experience in developing and implementing social media, communications and production strategies and activities for the Global Majority disruptors of Blue13 Dance Company. The intern will take a leadership role in creating promotional materials for digital and print uses. Also, the intern will help to plan and create social media content, website updates, and some light graphics, film, photo and editing work if desired. This is a part-time internship from June 2024-March 2025 (with the opportunity to continue with the company) for approximately 15 hours per week including some weekends and evenings. This is a predominantly remote position, but the intern will engage in person at times throughout the internship period.

The Communications Intern will have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in various aspects of arts administration. This internship will provide on-site exposure to the inner workings of Blue13 Dance Company and its programs, including the artist residency program (Playdate), the education program for Title-1 schools (American Kahani), and other large-scale performance events including a June engagement and a September engagement at the Ford.

Working closely with the Associate Artistic Director and the Digital Content Manager, the intern will play a pivotal role in communications. They will take a leadership role in generating social media content and developing messaging and growth strategies. They will have the opportunity to contribute their creative ideas and help shape the organization’s online presence. They will film and edit classes and rehearsals and BTS footage. Additionally, the intern will actively participate in weekly team staff meetings, fostering collaboration and learning how different departments work together to achieve common goals.

This internship values the intern’s voice and encourages them to contribute new ideas that align with Blue13’s ABIDE vision and support the mission to reimagine American dance. It offers a unique chance to gain insight into the dynamic field of arts administration and make a meaningful impact on Blue13’s programs and initiatives.

This internship will average 15 hours/week.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Create and curate social media content and captions

  • Support the Digital Content Manager to create and send biweekly email newsletters (Neon)

  • Coordinate artist takeovers for social media

  • Keep Blue13’s linktr.ee up-to-date

  • Manage and update info on the website (WordPress)

  • Design graphics for print and digital use as needed

  • Design promotional video material as needed

  • Film and edit promotional videos and other creative content

 

Blue13 welcomes applicants from diverse academic backgrounds. The ideal candidate will be creative, adaptable, highly organized, and able to work independently and meet deadlines. They will have a passion for the arts and a strong interest in production and communications within a performing arts setting. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask are crucial for success in this role. Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as creativity in generating engaging social media content, are highly valued. They should be strong writers, proactive, organized, resourceful, and feel comfortable generating and sharing ideas for continual improvement. Knowledge of MS Office and Proficiency using Adobe Creative Cloud software including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator are important skills as is knowledge of current social media platforms including Tiktok, Youtube, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.The intern should be comfortable working collaboratively in a team environment and be eager to contribute innovative ideas that align with Blue13’s vision.

 

Qualifications include:

  • Experience with WordPress

  • Knowledge of Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, & InDesign)

  • Experience with video editing  (Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, or comparable software)

  • Knowledge of current social media platforms including Tiktok, Youtube, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook

  • Experience working with a diverse group of individuals in an inclusive and equitable manner

  • Proximity to central/northeast LA with a flexible schedule

 

Physical Job Requirements: 

  • Remote work environment for digital tasks

  • During rehearsals/performances, move through a (possibly tight/crowded) space to take photos and videos.

This may involve tasks such as scheduling, coordinating with artists and venues, organizing and logging costumes and props, and ensuring smooth operations during performances. Additionally, the intern will actively participate in weekly team staff meetings, fostering collaboration and learning how different departments work together to achieve common goals.
