F**k Fusion Version 2, or How to (or not to) be adequately Indian.

Piece questioning what is allowable behavior and enterprise for immigrant and diasporic bodies and minds in American dance.

Premiere Date: February 21, 2020

McDaniel both honors and departs from classical Indian dance in this contemporary study of opposites, exploring the metaphorical tightrope constantly traversed by first and second generation non-resident Indians, and in fact by all immigrants and BIPOC. Facing the monolithic representation of one’s entire race or culture is something we deal with as artists on a daily basis. This piece shines a light on that and refuses to adhere to problematic colonizing constructs and terminology including “fusion,” “authentic,” and “tradition.”
